    LOST A PET

    IF YOU HAVE LOST A PET: ACT IMMEDIATELY, TIME IS CRITICAL!

    • SEARCH YOUR PROPERTY AND NEIGHBORHOOD THOROUGHLY. Cats and small dogs can get into tiny spaces. Look behind, under, and inside your appliances and furniture. Check your roof, attic and trees for cats. Also look for cats during the nighttime hours as they are nocturnal and may respond to you calling them. 
    • ASK EVERYONE YOU SEE IF THEY HAVE SEEN YOUR PET: the postman, newspaper deliverer, meter reader, pool cleaners, gardeners, trash collectors, school crossing guards. Give them a lost flyer with a picture of your missing pet and ask them to call you if they see your pet. 
    • KNOCK ON DOORS as a neighbor may have found your pet and is holding onto it for a period of time if there is no ID tag. 
    • POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA SITES WITH CURRENT PHOTO OF PET AND TELEPHONE NUMBER: Facebook, Twitter, NextDoor, Craigslist.
    • POST FLIERS WITH CURRENT PHOTO OF PET AND TELEPHONE NUMBER: People need to be able to see the photo and the telephone number, not a lot of small writing. If you offer a reward, don’t specify the amount. Be sure to post flyers at all local intersections, businesses, and veterinary offices. Post at each entrance and exit of all nearby neighborhoods at eye level. REPOST every few days as the flyers are regularly removed by city workers. 
    • CONTACT LOCAL AND 24 HOUR EMERGENCY VET HOSPITALS: your pet might be injured and brought in by a Good Samaritan.

    • WORDS OF CAUTION: NEVER respond to a “found” pet contact alone. Take someone with you and arrange to meet in a public place, not your home. Be on the alert for money scams. If the person who claims to have found your pet cannot describe certain features to you, it’s possible they don’t have your pet! 
    • CHECK ALL LOCAL SHELTERS EVERY 1 OR 2 DAYS: Most shelters will only hold onto lost pets for 4 days if there is no ID tag or microchip, or 7-10 days if there is an ID tag or microchip. Do not assume that if your pet had a collar or ID tag, that you will be called since collars can come off while a pet is missing. Be sure to ask shelter staff about animals that are being treated in areas of the shelter that are not available to the public for viewing such as injured or sick animals. 
    • CHECK ALL SHELTERS IN THE AREA: Sometimes, people who have found a pet will take it to another shelter that they think is a no kill shelter, even if it’s farther away. Others may take the pet home to a different area, then lose it. 
    • DO NOT GIVE UP! Some animals take days while others take weeks to months to show up at shelters, even years in some cases! Someone may be holding onto your pet, but decide in a month or two to take it to the shelter. 
    • IF THE PET HAS A MICROCHIP, CONTACT THE MICROCHIP COMPANY: Confirm that your microchip registration information is up to date, with current contact phone numbers.

    • CONTACT THE AALOC HELPLINE: LEAVE THE PET’S DESCRIPTION, DATE LOST, LOCATION WHERE THE PET WENT MISSING, AND TELEPHONE NUMBER: AALOC will contact you if someone calls about a found pet matching your pet’s description.
